The President of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT), Dr. Stephen G. Wells, and the Vice President of Student Services, Dr. David L. Greene have paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, at the Council Chamber on March 14, 2023.
The visit was to review the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2019. The MoU aimed at advancing knowledge based on reciprocity, mutual benefit, and best efforts.
During the visit, Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, the Provost of the College of Engineering, reported that all preparatory works on the 2+2 exchange programme had been completed, and the programme would soon commence.
Speaking on the contributions of NMIMT, the Provost stated that NMIMT has funded research activities in the College of Engineering worth $10,000 (USD) and supported over 20 students with scholarships for postgraduate studies. Additionally, he stated that, as part of the collaboration, NMIMT would fund the PhD studies of a staff member at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and train the technical personnel of the College of Engineering. Professor Nyarko, however, appealed for further cooperation in other departments such as Mechanical, Computer Materials, and Geological Engineering. He also called for faculty exchange programmes for young faculty members and joint teaching and research programmes, especially for postgraduate students.
In his remarks, Dr. Stephen Wells, President of NMIMT, emphasised the importance of building international relationships as a means to grow universities and increase student enrolment. He highlighted the need to strengthen joint teaching and research programmes to facilitate mutual learning.
Professor (Mrs.) Dickson indicated that KNUST, as an institution of higher learning, is committed to training students and staff to reach the highest pinnacle of education. She welcomed the idea of an exchange programme for PhD students, assured NMIMT of a mutually beneficial relationship and looks forward to strengthening the collaboration.
